Street photography

Street photography is more challenging form of photography. Difficult than getting best macro shot, or portrait shot. The photos need to have life in them. Techniques seldom matters in street photography as the scene is so dynamic and it doesn’t wait for anybody.

A successful street photography- or any photograph for that matter – is when eye, mind and heart come together. – Cartier-Bresson

The following tips may help you to succeed in street photography.

  • Do away with your zoom lens, you need to be where the action is.
  • Better to have wide angle less or 50mm prime
  • Fix your focus prior to shoot or use auto focus option
  • Get a smaller camera, even ordinary camera is more than enough
  • Learn to operate your camera without seeing it
  • Hide your camera

  • Try to shoot from the hip level
  • If possible try to participate in the scene
  • Do not worry if you are getting that perfect shot
  • Enjoy the thrill in shooting perfect strangers
  • Better ask if they wish pose for you (Remember Feynman’s story)
  • Travel light, less photographic gear

I love these pictures. For a long time I’ve been enamoured of large-format photography. Sometimes, when I look at pictures like this, I want to forget carrying around monster cameras and just do a little quick shooting of street scenes. It would probably help my creative eye as well – to become a bit more intuitive and not worry about “previsualizing”.

Illavarasan. That’s is the crux of the problem. Most of the time we don’t carry camera and magic moments just fades in front of us. It is difficult to carry a profession camera every time you go out and this is were a point and shoot comes handy. They are small anc compact and easy to use.

I do not carry out my F75 everywhere, so I shoot most of my photos with S10 point and shoot and I am happy with what I shoot. Not much photography wizardry but one that touches the soul….
