Yin & Yang at bookstore!

In a local book store, I found that Godel, Escher, Bach by Douglas Hofstadter to placed under the fiction section.

I also found that God Delusion by Richard Dawkins to place placed along the illustrated Bible under the New and Noteworthy section.

At last, I bought a copy of God Delusion…

    Venakt.

I am into initial few pages of the book. From it can make that Dawkins is against creationism and people who taking monetary advantage out of it. But must complete it to get the true picture.

Meanwhile, I am strongly against people/religion which makes gullible people into submission and extract all kind of advantage from them. All the ‘God’ is to me, a friend, whom I pass the buck and expect him to solve my problem. This act gives more confidence and peace that is needed to solve the problem at hand. This is the use of God to me, no more no less. But do we stop at that? (I think I need a separate post on this)

Meanwhile, long back got through GEB. Time when logic and math were difficult friends of mine! Need to revisit the book again. Also read about the rave review of “I am an Strange Loop” in New Scientist.

And coming back to Feynman, I have a paper back of “Surely you’re joking Mr Feynman” and cherish it a lot.

Finally do you believe in religion as portrayed by media and certain groups?

Atheism is being promoted in the print media as the new “hip” thing. Men are responsible for the all the wars and injustices in the world, not God. Richard Dawkin’s book is simply symptomatic of the human condition; any problem can be solved by deferring the blame. In this case the blame is deferred to a being that can’t answer back in the form of a literary criticism or scathing media assault. How convenient eh? The book completely overlooks all the great things religion has brought the world (oh how about 10,000 years of culture, architecture and meaning?). Dawkins seems intent on slurring the morals of religion, what he doesn’t realise is that the laws he abides by are built on them. Better luck next time Dawkins.

Godel Escher Bach however is true gem. Have you had a chance to read his latest work “I am a Strange Loop”? It’s again a remarkable and eye opening work. Many say that Hofstadter is not capable of producing brilliance again; I believe his latest book proves that assumption incorrect.

Also, you may have already read this book but Richard Feynman’s book “Surely you’re joking Mr Feynman” is rather enjoyable if a bit self indulgent. If you haven’t had a chance to read it, I strongly recommend you do so.
