Savant’s Mind

Most of us might have encountered this email. After you have read the email in detail you would have felt how bad your concentration is. Some may have encountered this in form of slides presented by their bosses or persons who promise to make you more efficient in 24 hours!

The message is something like the one above. The reader is given some time to read the message and later asked how many instances ‘the’ is found in the message. As usual majority of us will answer one, actually there are two.

Now savants don’t fall in to this trap as us. Vallayanur Ramachandran et’ al. say that they might have an answer for this behavior. According to them savants are less conceptual than non savants perhaps, because of a cortex that is functioning sub optimally, they process, censor and edit incoming information far less than most of us, thus there by paradoxically enhancing their perceptions of memory for trifles. Savants have shallower depth of processing than normal subjects.

Non savants miss the perception of ‘the’ because they focus on the meaning, but savants immediately notice it. One more example quoted by scientist is the following.

Now take some time and remember the following words.

Ice, Snow-man, Winter, North-pole, Chill, Kool-aid

Now figure out if the word ‘Cold’ appear in the above list? Most of us would say yes as we are making sense of words therefore the property ‘cold’. Savants are immune this kind of illusion, perhaps because of shallower depth of processing. Thus, at least savants may owe their skills to some degree of failure in higher level perceptual and conceptual encoding of incoming sensory information.

So next time when your boss picks on you for not concentrating enough in the meeting or questions you why those syntax errors in code went unnoticed in the first place, You know what to answer, isn’t
