Being a critic

The rise of internet has been boon to many of wannabe experts. People churn out trash after trash and pollute the sacred internet space (includes me). Who cares or who reads the trash. Today it is extremely easy be a movie, music, art critic. You need not understand a thing about what you are about to critic.

One way the critic can gain recognition or fame is to tell insane things about the topic and there by pull the angry viewers to his/her side. One becomes popular by being idiotic in the public, looks dangerous to me but they are fine with it.

One recent example for the above kind of criticism that I stumble upon is done by lady called Sonia Chopra, the music critic at Rediff.com. Read her critic about Illayaraaja’s Cheeni Kum and laugh till you die and do not forget to sail through the user comments.

Balki’s (remember ad for Idea Cellular, with Illayaraaja’s Nuagua Nayana song) Cheeni Kum has just four songs composed by Illayaraaja. The songs have Raaja’s midas touch. The original Tamil tunes are adapted for Hindi and background score looks mesmerizing to me. Find more at Cheeni Kum.

Update : Finally happen to hear the songs. As Prabhu points out  it would be better if the original interludes were retained as is but none the less the album is a stunner. I wish people up north appreciate the genius called Illayaraaja.
